SCHQ's 1st Faction War
by Panther on Sun Mar 11, 2007 4:29 pm
SCHQ now readies itself for members here to play in SCHQ's very own Faction Wars!

The Faction Wars are designed to allow players and members of SCHQ to join their favorite faction against the other factions in a series of battles over time to determine which faction is the strongest in each faction war. However, in order to get the ball rolling, we need you, the player! If you would like to join up in the Faction Wars, do go to our forum now, register, and join in your favorite faction's forum!

With enough members, you can then vote for a leader for each faction, and once that is done, we may begin our very first Faction Wars! Member listings have already been made in each of the faction forums, so you can officially join up as a member of that faction! Look into the relevant threads in each section for more details.

An announcement will be made when the time comes to vote for leaders. So, do stay tuned! And hope to see you in the forums!

Edited update: Just so we are clear on the issue, the Faction Wars will be fought in teams of 2 or 3 (or even both) online, in games. As to how these teams will be created, the leader of each faction will determine the method used for his or her particular faction.

Also, you need not worry about actually having to play. You can just join the Faction as a member for fun, for chatting with other players, and the like, for your own favorite faction. When the time comes to play, the leader need only ask for people who are interested in playing, so no worries if you do not want to play, but still want to have fun in the faction forums. So join us today!

IGN Talks to Chris Taylor
by Sol Invictus on Fri Mar 09, 2007 7:09 am
IGN met up with Chris Taylor at this year's Game Developers Conference, and they've written up an article about it. Here's a snippet:
Quote:
"RTS games, as it were, weren't really coming along at the pace you'd expect them to," Taylor said. "They were really flat. The graphics were getting better, there were minor improvements here and there." He saw a major opportunity to create a better RTS by using the mouse wheel to not only zoom in, but to zoom out and view the entire map. On top of that, he saw barely any games or programs with the ability to zoom in where the cursor was on the screen for quick, precise battle map management. It also allowed his team to create a much more diversified range of units, since the zoom opened up the possibilities for much larger maps. Instead of having to make ships roughly as powerful as tanks, Taylor said he could now create massive ships capable of wiping out entire squads with one hit. Experimental units came next. "We started off having a lot of them, but the production costs on these things are very, very expensive. So we had to trim it down to three [per faction]," said Taylor.

He went on to give a rather detailed account of trying to find a publisher for the game. He'd shopped it around to a few big name companies who rejected his proposals, and one who'd even struck a deal only to cancel it shortly afterward. "They looked at it, and they didn't get it. They were like, oh this just doesn't make any sense, they trotted out some line like PC gaming is dead. And here's ATI and Nvidia selling video cards like crazy. People are not doing Word on these cards." Taylor went on to say, "When it was cancelled by some rather large company with two initials, I was like oh game on [expletive]." Taylor was more than pleased when he eventually found THQ to publish the game.

GamePro Review Score Bribery Scandal
by Sol Invictus on Thu Mar 08, 2007 2:09 am
Here's something new. Apparently, the gaming magazine GamePro allegedly accepted a bribe to give Supreme Commander a 50% score. GWN reports:
Quote:
There is a huge buzz circulating on the Internet now about the controversial review of the popular real-time strategy game Supreme Commander written by GamePro's Australia division. Most reviews (as seen on ranking sites like GameRankings.com and MetaCritic.com) have been very positive about Supreme Commander, with reviews averaging around 80% - 90%.

GamePro Australia, however, gave Supreme Commander a score of 5 / 10 (50%), stating that the game was, "virtually unplayable" and that Supreme Commander represented the "saddest moment in the history of the [RTS] genre." The review was so controversial that GameRankings.com and MetaCritic.com have pulled the score from their respective sites. Now, while the review is accurate in that SC does have very high system requirements, we had no real issues with the shift key or the frame rate in general when playing on a relatively new system (Dual Core Intel, 1GB RAM, 7800GTX).

Gas Powered Games, developers of Supreme Commander, were understandably upset about the review, as it was one of the first Supreme Commander reviews to appear, and may have swayed some fans from purchasing the game.

Apparently, although this has not been confirmed as of yet, the controversy only became worse when rumors of a bribe began to surface. Electronic Arts, in competition with Gas Powered Games (EA's own RTS, Command & Conquer 3, ships near the end of March), supposedly offered a large sum of money to Game Pro Australia in exchange for the low review score of Supreme Commander.

There are now more rumors that GamePro Australia is being shut down, although this also is not yet confirmed.

If rumors of a bribe are indeed true, this represents an all-time low, not just for Electronic Arts and GamePro, but perhaps for the video game industry as a whole. Who knows if this has happened before.

That's pretty damn sad.

On the plus side, GWN has written their own honest to goodness review of Supreme Commander, which you can check out here.

They have posted an update/retraction to their story.
Quote:
Update: We're happy to report that the person who started the bribe rumor on the Gamespot forums has admitted it was a lie, so we've removed mention of the rumor from this story. Their rumor post has also now been removed at Gamespot, and mention of it on the Gas Powered Games forum has also gone.

Let's hope so.
