Article - Looking Forward
Looking Forward

Supreme Commander… what will it be like?

Just think about it for a second, there are a lot of "If’s" in there. Will it have three different frontiers of combat, or will it be just like Total Annihilation (Which is most likely), where the land, air and sea are mixed as one and played within a single, combined frontier. When I did find the articles that were in the PC Gamer magazine, it blew my mind, as more pieces of the elaborate puzzle of Chris Taylor’s grand design fell into place.

I learned what the 'giant spiders of doom' were called, "Monkey Lords" in which I found out from Gnome of TAU, was because the Cybran’s were based from artificially intelligent monkey life forms or something like that. I didn’t really care at the time, even though I do value any information I don’t know about Supreme Commander more then anything else. However, as I looked at the stunning screenshots available at Game Spy and the PC Gamer magazine, I realized that there was more detail to the nuclear explosions then before [in TA]. There were ripples in the water, as shockwaves and tidal waves raced out from the point of origin of the blast. I have never liked doing things over and over again, unless it’s absolutely necessary. And to get away from the traditional rock-paper-scissors shoot style was a nice thing. Where it could be more strategy instead of trying to build the right units to counter that or this and to get the job done. I absolutely hated trying to use the same units to counter a certain unit, especially in TA, where you had to (as Arm) just mass your units and attack with everything you had. As core, you had to advance fast enough so you can get the heavy units out so you won’t be overwhelmed by the swarming arm.

There are lots of improvements to the game, and the genre as a whole. Like many of you have read (and drooled) over, one example is the transport system, which seemed to be totally remodeled to let units fire from the transports and many other hidden secrets that the developers haven’t said anything about yet in any great detail. Further examples are of how some infantry units can jump high in the air, but are susceptible to anti air units, and massive spiders (and similar units) that can now crush units instead of trying to walk around/by them like in TA, is a nice improvement to have, especially since they also have the 'giant incinerator beam of doom' as I like to call it. Massive air craft carriers that can fly or submerged underwater while carrying aircraft that are ready to launch at a moment's notice. A sea destroyer that can go on land also. New aircraft with better abilities and more challenging to control or we will lose them (the fuel and weapons that they now carry). Supreme Commander really has a lot to go on, and it's really very fair to say that the expectations of the RTS gamer have never been this high before for any other RTS.

Overall, this seems to be a good game to get into and I look forward to the next reviews, releases of information, etc. about the game, which is a feeling that I'm sure everyone reading this article can attest to having about the game.
